The Central Forest Academy was set up during the Social Forestry Projects in many States under the developmental schemes in the Forestry sector during the IV and V Five-year plans.

Under the Indian Council of Forest Research and Education, the CASFOS Coimbatore is also attached to the 2 more premier forestry institutions. The 2 campuses are Tamil Nadu Forest Academy -TNFA (erstwhile Madras Forest College) and Institute of Forest Genetics & Tree Breeding -I F G & T B. These are the leading research institutes. This campus also houses the famous ‘GASS MUSEUM’.
